A teenager has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of Jamaly Samba Baibu in Islington.

On Tuesday, 29 August, a 16-year-old boy [B] appeared at the Old Bailey for trial in the murder of Jamaly Samba Baibu. A plea of guilty to manslaughter was entered and was accepted by the court.

He was remanded in custody to appear at the same court for sentencing on Friday, 17 November.

The boy had been arrested after arriving into the UK at Gatwick Airport on Thursday, 29 December 2022. He was charged on Friday, 30 December 2022 with murder and grievous bodily harm.

At 22:33hrs on Tuesday, 20 December, police had been called to Seward Street, EC1, where, on arrival, they found Jamaly and another 16-year-old boy with stab wounds.

Officers provided emergency first aid until the arrival of paramedics and doctors from London’s Air Ambulance. Despite the best efforts of all involved, Jamaly was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

The second boy’s injuries were not life threatening.

A murder investigation was launched led by Detective Chief Inspector Kate Kieran who said: “While nothing can bring Jamaly back, I am pleased that the guilty plea will save his family having to endure a murder trial that would have been extremely painful for them.

“My thoughts are with them today.”
