Officers have removed a gun from the streets of London and two men have been arrested following a proactive operation in Barking.

On Wednesday, 2 August officers from the local policing team in east London were carrying out a weapons sweep in Harts Lane as a result of information about ongoing issues involving gangs in the area.

At around 12:45hrs a revolver and live ammunition were found hidden in a bag in a hedge.

Officers recovered CCTV from the area which showed two men acting suspiciously.

Further enquiries were carried out, and the men, aged 19 and 20, were later arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm. They remain in custody at an east London police station.

Detective Sergeant Nick Tunge, from the Violence Suppression Unit in east London, said: “Gun crime can have a devastating impact on victims and their families, and the Met is committed to recovering firearms and identifying those who use them.

“We are using an intelligence and data-driven approach to better serve communities and I am pleased this operation has resulted in a potentially deadly weapon being removed from the streets of London.”
