22 June 2023 14:00 Man jailed for assaulting former partner Charles Hillman acted as if he had ‘owned’ the victim during their two-and-a-half-year relationship.

A man who repeatedly abused and assaulted his former partner has been jailed following a Met investigation.

Charles Hillman, 31 (16.07.91), of Caversham Street, SW3, was sentenced at Isleworth Crown Court on Thursday, 15 June to three years and six months’ imprisonment. He was previously convicted of one count of non-fatal strangulation and two counts of actual bodily harm.

The court heard how Hillman had acted as if he had ‘owned’ the victim during their two-and-a-half-year relationship which ended in June 2022 when the victim told a friend about the abuse she was suffering. The pair had met after Hillman claimed to be a life coach and used the surname Million.

He restricted her access to her phone, bank cars, key and food. He also assaulted her on a number of occasions, including on 22 June 2022 when a friend went to the property to help her leave.

Officers were informed at around the same time and began an investigation which involved taking a statement from the victim, as well as reviewing CCTV and phone data to support her account.

As a result of the evidence officers had gathered, Hillman was arrested in the same month and subsequently charged.

Detective Constable Stephanie Clarke, who led the investigation, said: “Hillman is a bully who controlled and abused his former partner. He subjected her to repeated assaults and his behaviour had a significant impact on her physical and mental health. I am pleased our investigation has resulted in him being jailed and we will continue to support the victim to ensure she is safe.

“I know how difficult it can be for people to speak out about domestic abuse, but I hope the outcome of his investigation demonstrates that we will take action to protect women and girls from dangerous men.”
