A driver who used different number plates to avoid being prosecuted for speeding has been sentenced following a Met investigation.

Zahid Hussain, 34 (30.01.80), of Mortlake Road, Ilford, pleaded guilty to perverting the course of justice and received a two-year suspended prison sentence on Tuesday, 19 December.

Officers identified that Hussain’s BMW had committed 10 speeding offences mainly on the A13 in east London – however he had attempted to avoid prosecution by changing his car’s number plates.

Further enquiries were carried out and Hussain was linked to all of the offences.

Stephen Cannings, from the Met’s Safety Camera Unit, said: “Altering the appearance of your vehicle number plates is not a minor traffic matter it is a serious criminal offence.

“Cases where it is suspected that the vehicle appearance or number plates have been altered to avoid prosecution for speeding offences will be robustly investigated.

“The Met will put offenders such as Hussain before the court and the judge has recognised the seriousness of the offence by imposing a suspended prison sentence today.”
